Holiday in the southern foothills of the Black Forest!
The Markgräflerland Region
Lipburg and Sehringen
The Location of our Holiday House
The little village of Lipburg (c.270 inhabitants), together with the nearby but higher situated village of Sehringen (c.320 inhabitants), have constituted a single district of Badenweiler since the boundary reforms of 1974. While Lipburg in the valley bears traces of an old village layout, Sehringen on the hillside, apart from a small number of farms dotted around, takes its character from newcomers, who in the 1950s and even earlier were already singing the praises of the Markgräflerland and building here. The most famous newcomer was the German Bauhaus artist and teacher Oskar Schlemmer (1888–1943), who together with his wife Tut built a modest country home with a studio for himself and his family. His memory and legacy in Sehringen have long been lost, as is witnessed by the sadly dilapidated state of Schlemmer’s house, which stands behind tall trees at 13 Kanderner Straße.
In Sehringen is the start of an interesting circular 5.6 km-long walking tour showcasing the region’s geology and mining history. Taking the tour will bring a long-forgotten era in Badenweiler’s history to life. There was mining here until 1926, and the walk, which has numerous information boards, takes you to ten shafts from former days.
Lipburg and Sehringen are also ideal setting-off points for walks in all directons of the compass. In addition to the walks organized by the Badenweiler Thermen und Touristik GmbH, we will gladly help you with the planning of individual itineraries.

Badenweiler
Known in the local Alemannic dialect as Badewiler and in Latin as Aquae villae (‘water village’), this spa town, in addition to the wonderfully opulent Cassiopeia Baths, has all modern facilities – supermarket, baker, butcher, chemist, post office, banks, numerous small restaurants, wine bars, a shopping street in a restricted traffic area, doctors, hairdressers, and a large tennis facility with several courts and an open-air swiming pool in the summer.
In the small town of Müllheim nearby there are many additional shopping possibilities – a market with regional produce on three days of the week (Tuesday, Friday, Saturday), an organic shop, a florist, an off licence, fitness studios, and an open-air swimming pool.
The Cassiopeia Baths
One of the most beautiful thermal and wellness complexes in Southern Germany.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Baden
In the former apartments of the archdukes of Baden there are, throughout the year, art exhibitions and Sunday matinées, with musical and theatrical performances.
The Ruins of the Roman Baths
One of the best-preserved ruins of a Roman bathhouse north of the Alps is situated a short walk from the Cassiopeia Baths. The old bath complex apparently dates from the second century AD, and must have exercised great appeal even then.

Bürgeln Castle (Schloss Bürgeln)
This fairytale Rococo castle between Badenweiler and Obereggenen is one of the most beautiful attractions in Markgräflerland. Visible from afar, it lies majestically on one of the Hochblauen’s hills. On clear sunny days the view from here stretches as far as the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland, the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau. The guided tour of the castle comes highly recommended, as does the café with its wonderful viewing terrace.
The Eggener Valley: A Landscape Paradise
The valley is just a few minutes by car from Lipburg/Sehringen. It is mainly famous for its fruit-tree blossom in spring.
Leisure in the Markgräflerland
The Baden Wine Trail
Between Freiburg and Basel stretches a vast area dedicated to viniculture. The varieties grown here are the native chasselas, but also the wonderful pinot blanc and pinot noir. We are happy to recommend our favourite wines and wineries in the locality.
